Car Design sketches.
72Design sketching
Often I visit Art Design Schools, Industrial Design Schools, Art Colleges, and several times I find interesting illustrations but poor sketches and many times few design projects or art students with a good sketch book. In car design training it is a must to learn how to sketch well in order to get all the techniques and the self confidence to move over in the experience and be betwenn the first in design classes. Unfortunately, lately and mostly in Europe, design students do not pay too much attention to this aspect for their career training. I remember that ,when I was a student at Art Center College of Design, to have a sketch book was a must starting the very first day. Even if it was difficult for me at the beginning with time I got better to the point of earning that important self confidence that gives you the real feeling you can draw about anything therefore cars, too.

Top Design Schools
Pforzheim University of Applied Science, Art Center College of Design, CCS Detroit, Royal College College of Art, IAAD Turin are some of the top Design schools where it is mandatory to start learning by drawing and sketching and by having a sketch book to feed regularly. The sketch book is periodicly checked by instructors and it is part of final evaluation, in this way the design student gets into a strict method which gives him the opportunity to learn discipline and how to get better and improve his/her skills.
A car sketch is not an easy task to accomplish, if you do not know how to draw a cube with his shadows perspective and chiaro-scuro you probably will never arrive to produce a professional convincing car sketch. Industrial Design schools should always force student to produce a lot of sketches a mostly force them to re-do every time, it is necessary to learm from mistakes. To re-do a sketch often provokes a sort of technical memory in the student's head which will prevent him to remake the same error again. This is one of the basic rules for a correct Car Design Training, however it can be applied to all art and design trainings and in every art design school, industrial design schools and Transportation Design schools.

Conclusion
My strong suggestion to all art and design students or amateurs of any type of art design school is to sketch sketch sketch. Do you want to be the best? Sketch it. Do you wont to learn seriously to draw from a TV set to a complex car interior? Sketch it. Do you wont to learn how to do Figure drawing? Sketch it. Milage is the key, don't think that few sketches and a final rendering is good for your homework, please do not get this attitude because you'll go nowhere. Be demanding, be serious study well drawing basics, train yourself, forget feeling too tired to continue. It is not just a job, it is about your passion and future, then try always to become the best because competition out there is very high and no matter how good looking will be your digital photoshop illustration if the perspective and the base sketch is not at the right level!
Sketch it! Have always with you your sketch book it will become soon your best friend.

Funkyflex attitude ;)
Great post as always. I agree, Sketching is an import skill to have. When Luciano says sketch he means SKETCH! You should practice sketching 200 sketches a day and that is the minimum too.

Excellent post!

Those are really good. Where did you get your most experience from when it comes to sketching and drawing?
would it be possible if you could give me a description of a day in the life of your job?

Bestest post, i love sketching, i am matriculating this year but its hard to get a good resourced school here in South Africa. I just need good assistance. Drawing cars is my passion, i stil have to learn how to draw nd render with softwares but i need support.
Your posts always motivate me, i learn some skills from them. Thanks Luciano!
I Will do so
Great article. Often we can be in such a rush to get onto the computer, and ignore the sketchbook. It is easy to think that a programme like photoshop will correct bad sketching, but it is not the case. Some of the best student work I have seen were the thumbnail sketches in a sketch book; a joy to look at. The process of arriving at a final idea can be as interesting as the final idea itself.
Some students have asked me which type of computer they should get when starting their design studies. I answer that a pen, sketchbook and a cool grey marker are the first things on any shopping list.
This is exillerating It motivates me every day evenwhen i'm damn bored CAR DESIGN is the FUTURE
